ICML 9 2005

Just as the final arrangements are being made for the ICML8 in London 2000, the IFLA Section of Biological and Medical Libraries is preparing to select the site for the 9ICML in 2005.

The IFLA Section of Biological and Medical Libraries will meet at the IFLA Conference in Bangkok August 20-28 and one item on the agenda will be to decide on the site for the 9th ICML in 2005. The process began last autumn with the distribution of a call for site proposals on numerous international listservs. During the year we have been responding to many cities who have expressed in hosting the conference. Three cities have completed the final bid process.

The Australian Library Association submitted the first complete bid with Sydney as the conference site. The Health Libraries Section, with Prue Deacon as chair, suggested the themes of Health library services to remote areas and/or Health library services in a multicultural society.

A second bid has been received from the Quebec City, Canada Convention Center and Richard Laverdière, from Laval University Scientific Library. The bid is supported by many of the local and national library associations.

Bireme, the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information has submitted a bid to host the conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Bireme, is a specialized centre of the Pan American Health Organization which is holding its biennal meeting in conjunction with 8ICML. Elenice de Castro, who is managing the bid, has proposed a theme of Information equity.

The Committee will have a very difficult time selecting from the three excellent bids.
