Improving the quality of local medical journals: challenges facing editors

Objectives:
This workshop will aim to help editors of local medical journals to increase the quality of their journals through certain editorial actions and policies.

Editors will learn more about:
1. How to get their journals indexed in bibliographic databases
2. How to provide a high quality peer review service
3. How to increase readers’ confidence in the articles and papers they publish.

Requirements for participants:
Participants must be editors or members of the Editorial Board, registered in ICML9 and having a good English knowledge. They must bring examples of the journals they publish to inform the discussions in the group of editors.

Workshop structure:
First hour: Three presentations, each followed by brief discussion

Second hour: three small group sessions, to debate on the feasibility, advantages, and disadvantages for their journals, followin g three main models:
group 1. Criteria for journal indexing in some electronic databases
group 2. The peer review process at the BMJ
group 3. The BMJ policies on transparency, specifically on declarations of competing interests (conflicts of interest) and funding for research

Closing session: presentation of conclusions and general discussion of the main challenges for editors who wish to raise the quality of their local journals
