P10 - Technical Cooperation for the Development of Libraries of Health: 20 years of experience of PAHO Honduras

During two decades the Representative Office of the Pan American Health Organization in Honduras has supported the organization and/or development of libraries and documentation centers as a strategy of dissemination of `scientific and technical health information` for the purpose of  improving the access to the information in a country with many difficulties in areas as: lack of human resources in the area of library science, lack of national policy on information, limited budget for the purchase of publications, little awareness of the importance of the information as a public good and the trend not to share the information generated by the people and institutions.
The Center of Documentation of the Representative Office in Honduras has contributed decisively to the dissemination of information using different strategies during these years; as `human resources education` in library science, supply of basic collections to regional libraries, implementation of Strategic Centers of PAHO Publications, s upport for the creation and strengthening of the Documentary Information Health Network of Honduras, continuous selective dissemination of information to users, intermediaries and producers and finally the support for the implementation and strengthening the Virtual Health Library of Honduras and others about adolescence, environmental health and gender.
This support has favored the utilization of some international initiatives as HINARI and the dissemination of them among  the institutions and health workers.
