The Theory of Social Representations constitutes a modality of qualitative method employed by groups of health scientists as a mean of understanding different issues of their area. Therefore, it is of interest to gain insight of the theoretical reference sources for the methodological development of these researches. Forty five articles supported by the Theory of Social Representations were identified from a list of 3408 articles published in 46 Brazilian Health journals between 2001 and 2004. A bibliographical analysis shows the use of 69 theoretical sources to support the empirical methodological approaches of social representations. The oldest one is of the year 1968 and the most recent from the year 2003. Seventy percent of the sources were published after 1991. Of the most frequently quoted four authors (Serge Moscovici, Denise Jodelet, Celso Pereira de Sá, Jean Claude Abric), it is noted that they are responsible for 38% of the sources of references where a single writer alone authored multiple article s. The proportion of 48.9% of the articles cite one or more texts of Moscovici, who authored seven of the identified sources. In the same manner, 37.8% of the articles cite Jodelet, who wrote ten of the identified sources; 31.1% of the articles quote Sá, who in turn is responsible for three of the identified sources, and 24.4% cite Abric, who is credited for six identified sources. This percentual distribution probably point out the identification of Brazilian researches to the theoretical base line thinking by these authors. Other authors are cited in proportions equal to or less than 13.3% of the articles. The quantitative indicators corresponding to each source, related to the above mentioned aspects, constitute the results of the bibliometric profile. The annexed list of bibliographical references of the sixty-nine sources has the intention of favouring the identification, localization and use by anyone interested in the Theory of Social Representations.
