P47 - Health documentation and information centers: decentralizing the documentation and facilitating the information access

The Centro de Informação e Documentação em Saúde – Ceids (Health Information and Documentation Center) is a documental and informational reference in promotion, prevention and health education within the Public Health School(Escola de Saúde Pública), linked to the State Health Department(Secretaria Estadual da Saúde - SES) of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, characterized by being specialized in public/collective healthcare. In 2003, a project intending to create Health Information and Documentation Cores (Núcleo de Informação e Documentação em Saúde -NIDS) within the nineteen Regional Health Districts (Coordenadoria Regional de Saúde - CRSs) was created, aiming at decentralizing, promoting and spreading information on permanent and ongoing education at the CRSs by implementing the NIDS, assuring equal access to information and documentation, also enlarging virtual access. During the 3rd. Meeting of the Collective Health Education Regional Cores, in 2003, reports were presented and questionnaires we re applied in order to gather data on the existing documents, facilities, material and human resources. Analyzing the research data, it was verified that the existing documents were not properly organized, that computer-based material and Internet access were needed, as well as the purchase of literature, equipment, suitable furniture and facilities. We know that information access is crucial not only within the permanent and ongoing education process of health technicians, but also for the development of their work in the towns, in order to promote actions and better understanding, thus searching new alternatives to face the issues affecting people in the health field. Ceids intends to participate in health priority actions and goals by improving infrastructure to access and spread health information at the CRSs serving the towns from each region, cooperating in the effective implementation of the Unique Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS) guiding principles and overcoming the existing social ineq ualities.
