P92 - Patient Page: a brief historical overview
Participants:
There is a strong interest in medical news. However, communicating medical research to the public can be difficult. To face this problem, the American Medical Association Science News began to distribute press releases about relevant JAMA articles to organizations around the world. In April 1998, JAMA published for the first time its Patient Page, written with the patient in mind, to make medical information understandable and helpful. Health professionals are encouraged to make copies for educational use with patients. One year later, the page was made more user-friendly in response to letters from physicians and other health professionals. In our opinion, patient pages strengthen the communication between patients and physicians and should be launched by other medical periodicals.
