P106 - Using context reacting signs at digital libraries - an user-centered design approach

Semiotic engineering considers that the interaction occurs when users and system exchange messages in an interactive device, characterizing it in semiotics terms.
Signs can be defined as “anything that means something for someone” and they constitute the ground for the ontology of the web application which the representations refer and through it they are lead to reveal in the interface. Amongst them, there are those called context reacting signs that promote, in the same scene, changes in states of one or more existing signs.
Using models, methods, tools and techniques of semiotic engineering, this paper approaches how user-centered design can make use of context reacting signs could improve visualization, navigation and searches in digital libraries.
