At present, virtual access to information is a need for all the professions, specifically for the Nursing area, for the professional education and permanent education or to ampliation this area of knowledge. Virtual libraries in health areas is a relevant way to disseminate knowledge and information. The aim of this study is to report the project of VIRTUAL LIBRARIES IN THE HEALTH - NURSING AREA in a conjoint association with the Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem (Brazilian Nursing Association) - ABEn, Nursing Schools ( São Paulo University, São Paulo University-Ribeirão Preto and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Juiz de Fora, Santa Catarina), and Libraries with BIREME/OPAS. The Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn), by means of the Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas em Enfermagem (Centre of Studies and Researches in Nursing) –CEPEn, started its political efforts still in the preceding decade, aiming to organize a data base which could bring answers to the need of information in the nursi
ng community nationwide. Similarly, the J.Baeta Vianna Library of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, subsidized by the BIREME, organized in 1988, a Data Base in Nursing – (BDEnf). Later, a Brazilian Sub Branch of Information in Nursing –BIREME/OPAS (SuREnf), which is part of the Brazilian Network of Information in Health Sciences of the BIREME/OPAS developed a storing process and recovered all the material published in this field. Thus, the construction of a VLH in Nursing started in 2000 and was based on discussions to improve the data available. From 2003 on, professionals of several institutions started to meet to consolidate this project, providing a preliminary version according to the Enterprise of the Brazilian Development-Nursing at the BIREME site. The VLH Nursing consists of 13 sub-projects interlinked and denominated as follows: Portal Development, Bibliographic Control of the National Literature in Nursing – (BDEnf), Web Site Catalogs, Terminology in Nursing (Thematic Structure of Nursing,
Portal of Electronic Magazines (full text), Portal with Nursing Thesis. Access to Evidence Based Evidence, Events Directory, Virtual Community in Nursing, Capacitation and Marketing. The project is now at its financial part analysis, involving all the partners and developmental institutions aiming to obtain the initial results, already in 2006. “The construction of a Virtual Library in Nursing interlinking and unifying the Brazilian Institutions of teaching and research in this area will be an instrument for information aid to all the segments of the nursing communities of the country, collaborating for growth, reaching internationality and providing better conditions for teaching, research, management and gestion for the Brazilian Nursing.
