The National Library of Medicine, of the National University of Honduras, it’s the only library in the country in the health area.
Taking advantage of the opportunity to be a cooperative center in the project “Improving Access to Information on Disasters and health”, under the sponsorship of the National Library of Medicine of  the United States, Regional Center of Information on Disasters and the Pan American Health Organization, the following areas have received support:
1. Technical infrastructure: supported with basic computer equipment
2. Access to electronic information and new channels of communication through Internet
3. Training of personnel vital to the country since we lack formal training in the field of information.
With these basic tools, the library starts a development plan that will unable it to provide additional services.
I. Generation of new products
1. Design of subject data bases: disasters, adolescence, AIDS
2. Desi gn of  Web Page: http//:cidbimena.desastres.hn
3. Digitization of Honduras information: CDROM,s in Disasters and 75 years of the Revista Médica Hondureña.
II. Strengthening of  collections: First institution in Honduras to take advantage of the initiative provided by WHO (HINARI) by which we receive biomedical journals. The COCHRANE Library provided by BIREME and the other subscriptions online provided to our readers. With the support of the Swedish Government we join the Peri-INASP program by which the  library has access to other scientific journals.
III. Extension services: A project was implemented with WHO/TDR (Tropical Diseases Research) in order to provide our services to the school Hospital’Mother’Child unit, and it was installed the information Unit , via Internet.
Since 1998, the library, assumes the coordinator Centre's role in Honduras, and starts to develop the Virtual Health Library (www.bvs.hn) in collaboration with BIREM E (PAHO). It has been formed a Technical Committee and  developed  VHL themes: Environment, Gender and adolescence.

The library keeps working with CRID, BIREME and other regional centers strengthening the Central American Information Network on Health and Disasters, proposing new strategies for cooperation and regional interchanges.
The support initiative has been the impulse for the development Library and to manage greater political support of the institution and better projection.
