The occult face of the interface: user-centered archival information services on the web.

The present study is within the scope of the Professional Master Degree in Information and Health Communication Management of the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública Sérgio Arouca/FIOCRUZ. It aims at approaching ideas that are being developed in the elaboration of my dissertation which deals with ‘User-Centered Archival Information Services on the Web’. In this study, it is observed that, with the advance of Information and Communication Technologies new ways of making available and giving access to archival information are created. Virtual information spaces rise as, for example, the web archival information services which, as the ‘traditional’ services, must be centered in the user, attempting to meet information needs in the process of information transfer. It is important to underline that the reference archivist is not present in these services, what makes the development of these user-centered services even more relevant. Through theoretical-methodological reflections about User Studies, especially the Sense Making Approach, it is possible to bring contributions for improving these services, in terms of conception, evaluation and/or updating.
