Whereas Information and Communication Technologies enable update and accurate information to be provided in scholarly libraries, these institutions are thereby urged to reconsider their profile. The implementation of Internet access in the university library brought about changes in the electronic format of some of its databases, e.g. from CD-ROMs to on-line resources as the case was for both LILACS and MEDLINE. The access to Health Sciences-related information, formerly based on the physical collection, may now be carried out by virtual access to information. At the State University of Bahia (UNEB) Central Library in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) the retrieval of information through access to Internet is available for users. This study aims to both find out the reasons why specialized health-related databases have not been used in that particular library and to determine the existing hindering factors. Questionnaires have been completed by Health Sciences undergraduate and graduate students. Data analysis reveale d that (i) users are required to have specific training to enable them to carry out searches in databases; and (ii) a key factor leading to use of such databases is their promotion by both faculty and librarian teams.
