Inside several public, private and of the third section institutions it is possible to notice the existent modifications that current society has gone trough, as a result of the impact of technologies of both information transmission and storage. In the specific case of libraries and other information centers, the focus of these technologies is not just to store and transmit information but to make them knowledge creators. In this context, the present study intends to analyze how much does contemporary society is revealed, more and more, dependent on information and communication technologies, how much do these challenges demands a change of profile and professional adaptation to the new attributions that are imposed to nowadays professionals that work in the information area directed to its treatment and dissemination, leading them to become what's been called the architects of information. It does a retrospective ap proach starting from the principle that the information, since early days, is a faithful company of human beings, it stands out the person of the librarian as one of the first professionals in charge of the function of storing, preserving and disseminating the information, showing that the architecture of information has always being present, in a embryonic way since the most ancient libraries. It highlights the existence of architecture of information and the concept of librarianship, the evolution of its strategies to disseminate information and knowledge, the traditional techniques used to organize information developed from the 19th century, the need to use rules, standards and procedures that facilitate the access to the information. The objective of the study is to point out the importance for the librarians to stay alert to the concepts and traditional methods of the biblioteconomy and at the same time to be prepared to use new technologies that make a lot more dynamic the process of information mana g ement.
