The Health Science Information Professional

This work focuses on enhancing the equity of health information access through enabling the librarian’s adequate education in health science area in Brazil. In this aspect, the role of the information professional is enhanced, not just as an essential support, but as an effective participant in the research team, in the appropriate use of the information on the decision making processes, in research and for professional practices. The movement towards the education of the health information professional identified in the literature is related to the new demanded profile of this professional by the information society. The objective is to offer subsidies to capacitate the health information professional, from data obtained from an exploratory study of the literature in the area. The research was developed under a qualitative approach with the critical analysis of the identified and selected information. It was a literature systematic review. The result shows a picture of the training tendencies for the i nformation professional in the health science area with international acknowledgement, and it shows the main areas of the profession, which should be part of this professional education in Brazil. This study is an evidence of the necessity of proposing an education appropriate to our social, economical and cultural reality, which should allow this professional to respond to the expectations and social demands of the health area in our country.
