Introduction: In September 2004 the Central Medical Library of the
Methods: Twenty-four JSM students participated in four interactive training sessions (4x2 hours) within one week. Subjects of the sessions were Evidence Based Medici ne, Search Strategy, Reference Manager, and SDI’s/Alerts. The first three sessions were followed by homework exercises that had to be completed and returned to the teaching librarian. The students received individual feedback on their homework.
Evaluation: Twenty-three JSM students successfully completed the training. The library received 20 evaluation forms in return at the end of the course. The statement that the training was interesting was agreed by 75% of the students; 25% partly agreed. The statement that the training was relevant was agreed by 90% of the students; 10% agreed partly. The total time spent on homework assignments was 5.2 ±1.4 hours. The training as a whole was rated with 8.4 ± 0.7 on a scale from 1-10. Despite the high workload, both students and teaching librarians agreed that the course was very successful. Spontaneous reactions were for example ‘I should have known this in the first year' and 'this course should be offered to all students’.
