P137 - The MS and PhD training at a non-academic research organization: the experience of René Rachou Research Center/FIOCRUZ

René Rachou Research Center is a non-academic institution, linked to Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) and situated in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State. The Center is dedicated to the study of diseases that affect mainly the less-developed countries, like Chagas disease, intestinal helminthoses, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and different aspects of malaria, for 50 years.
The excellence reached by ´René Rachou´ is internationally recognized, and it has been attracting, since the creation of the first Brazilian postgraduate courses, countless students, already registered in academic institutions in Brazil or in foreign countries, searching for an opportunity of developing their master dissertation or doctorate thesis in its laboratories. Between 1971 and 2004, 174 dissertations and 112 thesis were concluded there. It was possible due to partnerships with academic institutions, in special the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), with which the Center has a legal accord that is valid since 1969.
This work shows the results of a large data collection amongst the postgraduate students that developed their research work in ´René Rachou´ during the period 1971-2004, in order to know who they are, where did they came from, where are them now, what are them doing, and how they evaluate their experience at the Center. The project was developed between July/2004 and May/2005, ordered by the Director that wanted to know the Center contribution to the training of human resources of high-scientific level. Besides that, the project had the purpose of helping the institutional postgraduate policies and to offer to the governmental agencies for research support a large view of postgraduate training in non-academic research centers.
The results show that ´René Rachou´ has developed an important role in training human resources since 1969. It has contributed to the expanding of research groups in Parasitology to others Brazilian regions and several countries in Latin America. The results show, also, the advantages of partnerships in the training of human resources of high level. Since 2003, the Center offers an Ms and PhD program in Health Sciences, but even so, it continues hosting students registered in other institutions to develop their research work in its laboratories, with the assistance of its scientists. The presence of students in ´René Rachou´ is impressive. In its 14 research laboratories there were, in last December, only 28 scientists, but around them, there were more than three hundred persons, including visiting scientists, collaborators and students of several levels, since undergraduates till posdoctors.
